Warsaw Boys 48, Portage 32
After a blistering performance behind the arc on Friday night, Warsaw went just 1-5 from deep but still had enough mustard to put away Portage in the Champions of Character Classic at Grace College.
Warsaw went 13-17 Friday night from three against Wawasee, but only had one make from Bishop Walters against the Indians.
Instead, the Tigers (5-3) scored 36 points in the paint and shot 44 percent from the floor (20-45) from inside the arc in earning a win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Jaxon Gould led Warsaw with 14 points, six steals and four assists. Judah Simfukwe had eight points and eight rebounds and Russ Winchester added three offensive rebounds.
Lawrence Harris had nine points and five boards to lead Portage.
Triton Boys 60, Plymouth 40
The Trojans (4-1) once again rode the hot hand of Ashton Oviedo to a win at The Rock.
Oviedo was 11-18 from the floor and finished with 25 points, along with five steals in the win. Tyson Yates had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals and Cole McKinney added five assists and four steals in the win.
Easton Strain had 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals for the hosts.
Chandler Westafer and Jacob Pitney combined for 27 points and five rebounds, but Triton fell to Plymouth 44-40 in the JV game. Caden Weidner was 10-13 from the free throw line and had 17 points to lead Plymouth.
Tippecanoe Valley Boys 56, Caston 53 (OT)
Valley claimed its first win of the season Saturday night at Caston.
Playing short three players from injuries and COVID tracing, Valley got three second-half treys from Cooper Walls, who had just the nine points and three rebounds, but his board late in OT helped seal the win.
Nolan Cumberland led the Vikings (1-2) with 20 points, 16 coming in the second half, and had five assists, four steals and three rebounds. Braden Shepherd added 12 points and four assists.
Valley used 11 points from Damion Kohler to get past Caston 48-32 in the JV contest. Kyle Johnson and Dom Welk added eight points each.
Tippecanoe Valley Girls 60, Whitko 31
Valley earned another win in the Three Rivers Conference in a Saturday matinee in South Whitley.
Kaydence Mellott caught fire in the first quarter, hitting four three-pointers and finishing with a game-high 22 points. Mellott hit six threes overall.
Sidney Wagner finished with 21 points, 14 of those coming in the first half where Valley (7-3, 2-0 TRC) claimed a 36-10 advantage.
Brookelynn Coburn led the Wildcats with 10 points and Kloe Kraig added eight points.
Pioneer Girls 46, Triton 34
Pioneer claimed a Hoosier North Athletic Conference win Saturday afternoon at the Trojan Trench.
With the score tied at 22 at the half, Pioneer earned its third HNAC victory while Triton dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the HNAC.
Triton’s interior played well, with Addyson VIers, Lexia Hostrawser and Abbey Viers combining for 21 points and 15 rebounds. Taren Yates added 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Triton won the two-quarter JV challenge, 14-7.
