WINONA LAKE — The future Winona Lake ice rink pavilion has been named.

The Village at Winona Managing Director Nick Hauck confirmed to InkFreeNews this week the name is Miller Sunset Pavilion.

Mary Louise Miller and a group working on fundraising for the project selected the name, said Hauck.

Miller comes from her and her late husband, Biomet co-founder Dane Miller’s last name.

“The name Sunset came from an interview Dane Miller gave,” Hauck said. It was related to when Miller decided to buy back his company and privatize it again.

Miller said then he and Mary Louise could have just ridden off into the sunset, but chose to purchase the company back to support the employees.

Hauck said the name will be officially announced when the fundraising campaign for the pavilion starts.

The 20,000 square-foot pavilion housing the ice rink is being constructed at the former site of the Billy Sunday Tabernacle along Park Avenue. At a public hearing for the project in February, leaders estimated the cost to be $6.5 million.

Part of that cost is already covered with the K21 Health Foundation paying for $1.5 million, and Mary Louise Miller giving $250,000 for the project via the Dane and Mary Louise Miller Foundation.

The project will include the pavilion containing the rink, an outdoor gas fireplace where skaters may warm up and a maintenance building.
