SYRACUSE – The 2021 Wawasee Warrior Open golf outing danced through the rain drops Thursday to serve as a successful start to the upcoming school year.
The annual golf event took place at Maxwelton Golf Club, which was soaked from an overnight rain and a couple close calls in the morning and afternoon sessions. All the while, the outing hosted over 40 teams in the fundraiser for the Wawasee athletic department, which helps fund 22 sports programs.
“We had 43 teams in all today, which is a great step in the right direction to start the year,” said Wawasee athletic director Brent Doty. “We formed a little committee this year and put together a plan of what we wanted to accomplish and our goal was 40 teams, so we reached that. That’s awesome, and hopefully we can reach 50 next year.”
The two-session event had the morning run conquered by the team of Nate Scherer, Luke Baker, Scott Melbrod and Chris Ganshorn. Runner-up for the morning session was the team of Jeff Phillips, Rob Griggs, Chad Runkle and Ben Almster.
The afternoon winning team was comprised of Bill Cripe, Andy Cripe, Ron Everingham and Jon Everingham. Runner-up afternoon honors went to Tyler Fowler, Scott Beasley, Vince Beasley and Clint Beasley.
Women’s longest drive for the day on 14 went to Nicole Beasley, men’s longest drive on six to Joe Leach. Longest putt on 18 went to Will Maul, second closest to the pin on nine went to Jon Everingham, and the putting contest winner was Mark Casey.
Doty, who usually plays with the Beasley team, chose to sit and watch after taking over the golf event in his first year as athletic director.
“Thousand percent killing me,” Doty said with a laugh on not playing in the outing. He continued, “Really, this is all about the community and a testament to them supporting us. We want people out at our events, whether it’s football or basketball, but also golf and tennis. We want people to enjoy their time at our events, and hopefully they enjoyed themselves today. Maxwelton is a great spot for an event and a great host, we couldn’t be more happy to play here.”
