September Is Library Card Sign-up Month
News Release
SYRACUSE — Signing up for a library card provides access to technology, multimedia content and educational programming that transforms lives and strengthens communities. September celebrates libraries’ impact with Library Card Sign-up Month.
During the month, visit the Syracuse Public Library online or in-person to see what’s new and what programming is occurring. Also, encourage friends without library cards to sign up during the month. Those who live within the town of Syracuse and Turkey Creek Township can sign up for free. The library has nonresident cards, too. Both cards give access to the Evergreen Indiana library network, meaning it can be used at any Evergreen library, such as North Webster, Milford, and more around the state.

September Book Club Pick
September also features Banned Books Week, Sept. 26 through Oct. 2. In honor of this week, the adult book club will be reading “Looking for Alaska” by John Green, a novel that has been repeatedly listed among the American Library Association’s “Top 10 Most Challenged Books.” The novel follows Miles Halter as he leaves for a boarding school to seek what the dying poet François Rabelais called the “Great Perhaps.” Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young, who will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps. “Looking for Alaska” brilliantly chronicles the indelible impact one life can have on another.
Copies are available upstairs at the library. “Looking for Alaska” is also available as an e-book and audiobook on Libby. Discussions on the novel will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, in person in the downstairs meeting room, and at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, via Zoom. Contact Becky Brower, [email protected], for information or to receive a Zoom invitation.
Children’s Department Kicks Off New Programming
Stop by the children’s department at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, for both the homeschool program and story time! The homeschool program will cover different topics each Friday for home-schoolers and their children. At the same time, younger children can enjoy story time.
New take-and-make crafts will return the first week of September as well.
Friends of Library Meeting
The Friends of the Syracuse Public Library will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2. Meetings are a great way to learn what the Friends are about. Knock on the Harrison Street door for entry since the meeting occurs before the library opens.
Closed Labor Day
The Syracuse Public Library will be closed Monday, Sept. 6, in observation of Labor Day.
