CLAYPOOL — The Indiana Department of Transportation is making changes to the intersection of SR 14 and Packerton Road where several serious traffic accidents have occurred.
The intersection is changing from a two-way stop on Packerton Road to an all-way stop, adding stop signs on SR 14. The change is scheduled to take place on or after Monday, Sept. 13.
Changes to the intersection were recommended after an INDOT traffic study showed an even traffic volume split, the type and frequency of crashes occurring and public concern.
Drivers should be aware of the changes to the intersection and continue to exercise caution while driving in the area.
In 2021, there have been three serious accidents in that area.
On April 8, a three-vehicle accident involving a semi occurred at the intersection. A 20-year-old woman was airlifted from the scene and a 62-year old man was taken by ambulance to a Fort Wayne hospital.
On May 12, Kenyan C. Bennett, 22, Warsaw, was traveling south on Packerton Road and stopped at the flashing light at SR 14. When he continued south into the intersection, his vehicle was hit. Bennett was airlifted from the scene.
A few days after Bennett’s accident, on May 15, Brendyn R. Stump, 16, Akron, was traveling east on SR 14 near Packerton Road when his vehicle left the roadway and hit a utility pole. Stump later died from his injuries on May 17.
