NWS: Severe Weather Threat Is ‘High’
The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has now placed Northern Indiana under a high risk of severe weather for this afternoon and tonight.
Strong storms are expected to quickly develop this afternoon and evening and produce damaging winds, large hail and the possibility of strong tornadoes. The areas most likely to experience severe weather are extreme eastern Iowa, northern Illinois, northern Indiana and northwest Ohio.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop into a fast-moving squall line producing wind gusts of 75 mph. State and local emergency managers are monitoring this potentially dangerous situation and will provide updates and information as the situation develops.
Kosciusko County Emergency Management Director Ed Rock warns residents to be prepared for power outages and damages caused by hail and high winds, which are expected.
The storms could also see large hail and heavy rains (up to 2-3 inches).
Strong winds could lead to downed trees, power outages and the potential for property damage. Heavy rains have the potential to cause flash flooding, localized flooding, ponding on road surfaces and washing out roads. The strongest severe weather threat will most likely between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m.
