WARSAW — Since the COVID-19 pandemic first began, finding typical police vehicles within certain timeframes has been difficult for Warsaw Police Department.
“Ghost graphics,” which are low-visibility decals that blend into a vehicle’s design and paint scheme rather than contrast with it, have become a new solution.
According to WPD Public Information Officer Brad Kellar, the purpose of ghost graphics is to be more subdued during the day to aid in traffic enforcement.
At night, ghost graphics are reflective and are even more noticeable than traditional graphics.
“We first (used ghost graphics) on my vehicle about two years ago to be used in criminal interdiction at night,” said Kellar. “Since then, we received a lot of praise from the community as to how it looked.”
Kellar said several of WPD’s vehicles use ghost graphics, and that the trend is becoming common nationally.
“The result was purchasing vehicles that were not standard colors,” said Kellar. “So we have added a few more with ghost graphics recently since they were non-traditional colors. It’s really become popular over the last decade, especially for specialty units and traffic enforcement.”
