WARSAW — A new alcohol permit for Brook Pointe Inn in Syracuse was approved by the Kosciusko County Alcohol and Tobacco Commission during a meeting on Thursday, June 2.
The inn at 4906 E. 1200N is owned by Ben Plikerd.
Plikerd said the decision to begin serving alcohol at the inn came from a lot of community interest in upgrading their romance package from sparkling grape juice.
“While we were in the process of doing that, we felt it in our best interest to offer a small bar in the hotel itself,” said Plikerd.
Plikerd said the bar would not open until sometime in 2023. He told the board he has several staff members who have experience with serving alcohol.
The board also addressed two permits with violations during their meeting. Representatives for Arrow Um, doing business as Warsaw Seafood, 937 N. Detroit St., Warsaw; and La Troje, 115 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw, said their restaurants had servers provide alcohol to minors. Both restaurants have paid fines as a result. The board approved the permit renewals after the violations were addressed.
A permit renewal with a violation for Port Winona LLC, 807 E. Canal St., Winona Lake, was also put on hold. The permit is currently under Jim Zachary’s name. Zachary passed away in August 2021. Port Winona has recently changed ownership, with the business being closed temporarily.
State Excise Officer April Tackett said Port Winona’s new owners are pursuing their own alcoholic beverage permit versus the one currently in Zachary’s name.
The following permits with no violations were also approved by the board:
- Lagos Steakhouse LLC, doing business as Jimmy’s Restaurant, 104 W. Himes St., North Webster. Beer, wine and liquor – restaurant.
- Mad Anthony Brewing Company Inc., doing business as Mad Anthony Lake City Taphouse, 113 E. Center St., Warsaw. Beer, wine and liquor – restaurant.
- Tippy Creek Winery, 5920 N. 200E, Leesburg. Beer and wine retailer – restaurant.
- Winona Heritage Room, 901 Park Ave., Winona Lake. Beer, wine and liquor – catering hall.
A permit for Elisabeth Thompson was again continued for further investigation. The permit, which was transferred to Thompson in 2019, is in escrow and based out of Mentone. The board asked Tackett to send Thompson a letter requesting she attend their July meeting to provide an update on her plans to establish a restaurant.
The local ATC board’s next meeting will be held at the Kosciusko County Courthouse at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 7.
