Nick’s Picks: Inaugural Edition
Football is back and that means that the fall sports slate will finally be in full swing starting Friday night. The new season on the gridiron will bring new opportunities for players and coaches alike. Even more exciting is the new opportunity I have this year, the chance to let the world inside my mind. As scary as that sounds, I promise it will be worth your time.
Every Thursday I will be posting my picks for matchups from area high school squads to college programs and maybe even a few professional teams along the way. This feature is all about reader entertainment, comments are encouraged. It’s all for fun so I hope you enjoy the new feature.
High School Football Week 1 8/22:
Columbia City at Warsaw, 7 p.m.
The Scoop: The Eagles have become more competitive with the Tigers in recent years but this season’s crop of seniors for Warsaw has a lot to prove. I expect to see Warsaw make a statement to start its season on Friday night.
The Pick: Warsaw.
Caston at Triton, 7 p.m.
The Scoop: I like the new hire for Triton in head coach John Johns. He brings a lot of excitement to the program. The Trojans will shock some teams this year, but I do not think it happens quite yet. The Pick: Caston.
Whitko at Wawasee, 7:30 p.m.
The Scoop: Both teams are being led by first year head coaches in Josh Mohr for Whitko and Josh Ekovich for Wawasee. Can we call this match up the “Josh Joust?” No worries, I am just ‘joshing’ you. But enough of that. The Warriors have owned this kick-off weekend rivalry since its inception. It is hard to make a pick with two rookie head coaches so this game is all about location, location, location.
The Pick: Wawasee.
Tippecanoe Valley at Culver Academy, 7:30 p.m.
The Scoop: Valley is a team that looks to have a lot of potential entering the 2013 season. Culver has won the past two meetings but I look for Valley to be thanking the Academy for a season opening win.
The Pick: Tippecanoe Valley.
Saturday 8/23:
Boys High School Soccer: Lakeland Christian Academy at Whitko, 5:00 p.m.
The Scoop: This should be a good match up and a toss up between the two schools. Whitko has appeared to play a tougher schedule to this point and will not go down easy at home.
The Pick: Whitko
Women’s College Soccer: Women’s National Team of Haiti at Grace College, 4:00 p.m.
The Scoop: This is by far and wide the biggest sporting event taking place in the county this weekend. Last year the Haitian National Team won 3-0 over Grace at Miller Field. This is the place to be on Saturday evening and results will be secondary to the event itself but I have no hate for Haiti.
The Pick: Women’s National Team of Haiti.
