LARWILL — Whitko Career Academy students recently learned about plumbing and related trades.

WCA welding, precision machining and engineering programs heard from Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 166 Director of Training Jess Wagner.

Wagner’s presentation began with an overview of the trades represented by the local 166, consisting of  plumbers, pipe fitters and HVAC. He then described the type of work represented by each skilled trade and what a typical work day would be like.

Wagner also explained what a labor union is, its purpose and how it conducts business. Students then asked questions, which led to discussion on employability skills, learning styles, industry-recognized certifications, personal finance, workplace safety and apprenticeship opportunities.
