Ruth J. Mercer — UPDATED
Ruth J. Mercer, 84, Rochester, died peacefully Friday, Jan. 27, 2023, at home in Rochester, surrounded by her family.
She was born March 21, 1938, in Plymouth, the daughter of Clifford “Sam” and Verna Irene (Kimble) Fear. She attended Plymouth High School. She has since resided in Rochester. She spent many years living on the channels of Lake Manitou and enjoyed being a part of the Lake Manitou Ski Club, cheering for her girls and the ski club team.
After raising her daughters, she worked at Life Care Nursing Home, where she met her forever life partner Ronald Mantey. They enjoyed many great adventures together, including being snow birds in Florida. Visiting Mackinac Island with Bob and Alice was another favorite. Their most memorable trip was down the Rhine River. Sadly, Ronald died June 7, 2002.
Ruth was the most caring and giving mom and “Me Moo” one could ever ask for. She had a special way she signed every card to her grandchildren: “Love You Lots, Me Moo and Penny Dog.” That signature is something they will cherish forever. She enjoyed being outside, pruning her flowers and mowing on her John Deere lawnmower.
Those who survive with broken hearts include her two daughters, Jenny (Ken) Coleman and LuAnn (Rick) Jackson; grandchildren, Carmie Rangel (Erik Smith), Britney Wood (John Gray) and Taylor Pugh; great-grandchildren, Liam Rangel, Lucy Rangel, Brylie Kiggens and Tony Kiggens; sister, Sharon Thompson; and special friend who was like a son, Kevin Kollman. She was preceded in death. by her parents; life partner, Ronald Mantey; and brothers, Darwin “Bill” Fear and Robert Dean Fear.
