Warsaw Sports Wrap – Sept. 5
The Warsaw boys’ tennis team took another step towards another conference championship Thursday night.
A singles sweep powered the Tigers past Plymouth 3-2 in a key Northern Lakes Conference clash.
The defending NLC champion Tigers won all three singles matches in straight sets to improve to remain undefeated in league play.
Sam Rice led the way at No. 1 singles for coach Rick Orban’s team with a 6-3, 6-1 win over John Hunter.
Will Petro posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 single over John Gerard. Evan Miller made it a clean sweep with his 6-0, 6-3 win over Nate Knapp at No. 3.
The host Pilgrims took both doubles matches. The duo of Matt Flynn and Max Holloway topped Kyle Wettschurack and Nic Jansen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. The team of Brayden Davidson and Ryan Johnson prevailed over Ryan Wettschurack and Christopher Herendeen 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2.
Warsaw, which bounced back from a tough 3-2 home loss to Culver Academies Wednesday, improves to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in NLC play.
The junior varsity match was a 6-6 stalemate. Winning for Warsaw in singles play were Andrew Gauger, David Homme and Caleb DeBoest. The Tigers also got wins from its doubles teams of Nikos Schlitt and Cole Baker, Hudson Snyder and Chris Stichter and Jean-Luc Baldwin and Graham Ousley.
Warsaw hosts Crown Point Saturday at 11 a.m.
Boys’ Soccer Team Fit To Be Tied
A busy week continued for the Warsaw boys’ soccer team in Fort Wayne Thursday night.
And once again, it was another tie for coach Scott Bauer’s squad.
Warsaw, ranked No. 4 in Class 2-A, played to a 0-0 stalemate versus Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian in the Carroll Classic Tournament in Fort Wayne. Blackhawk is ranked No. 8 in Class 1-A.
Warsaw started its week with a 2-2 tie at Penn on Saturday before rallying for a 1-1 deadlock at Concord Wednesday night in a key Northern Lakes Conference clash.
Blackhawk, since the game was part of a tournament, advanced by virtue of a 5-3 edge in penalty kicks following the scoreless contest.
Warsaw, the defending Classic tournament champions, had three shots Thursday night and two corner kicks. Blackhawk had five shots and six corners.
Warsaw, now 3-0-4, will play Saturday at 9 a.m. at Carroll in tourney action versus either Homestead or Fort Wayne South in a loser’s bracket match.
