April Showers Bring May Flowers

WARSAW — We’ve had plenty of April showers, so May flowers should be on their way. Children’s Services has some stupendous books about flowers. “Bloom Boom!” by the late Indiana author April Pulley Sayre is full of gorgeous photographs and a few words. You might enjoy this by yourself or with the littles in your life.
We have a small book, a Golden Guide from St. Martin’s Press, called “Wildflowers” that would be discreet enough to take on a nature hike this spring. Contained inside this little gem are images of flowers on each page, a bit of information on identification and cultivation, and a highlighted range map.
You could go big, instead, with “The Big Book of Blooms” by Yuval Zommer. In this publication you will find fun, colorful paintings and the answers to many of your flower-related questions. Have you heard that the one species of Venus flytrap lives in nature only in the subtropical wetlands of the Atlantic coast of the U.S.? Did you know that over 3,000 varieties of tulip are grown world-wide? You can also look for the hidden golden bulbs, 15 of which are secreted throughout the pages of this book.
“Spring in the Woods,” a picture book in the “Taking a Walk” series, is a seek-and-find book. The findings build throughout the book until you have found one big brown bear, two blue birds, three bushy-tailed red foxes, and so on. More animals appear as the story proceeds.
I’ve been enjoying a graphic novel (a type of bound comic book) by Patrick McDonnell. It’s about his characters, the Mutts, and it’s called “Spring Diaries.” Some of the comic spreads are sweet, and some are funny. I’m actually thinking of giving this as a gift to an adult family member. Check it out!
