Warsaw Sports Wrap – Sept. 10
The Warsaw cross country teams beat the heat and a pair of foes Tuesday evening.
The pair of Tiger teams opened Northern Lakes Conference competition on a sweltering day with wins over Elkhart Memorial and Goshen at WCHS.
Ellis Coon continued to show why he’s among the state’s best in pacing coach Jim Mills’ team to two convincing wins.
Coon captured the boys’ race with a time of 17:10 as the No. 7 Tigers beat Goshen 18-40 and Memorial 16-43 in league action.
Allison Miller once again paced coach Scott Erba’s Warsaw girls’ team. Freshman Miller was second overall in a time of 19:54 as Warsaw bested Memorial 26-31 and Goshen 17-40.
Nick Bergen was right with teammate Coon at the finish line for the Tigers as he took second place also in a time of 17:10. Owen Glogovsky finished in fourth place in a time of 17:13 for the Tigers, followed by Tyler Houvener in fifth (17:15), Daniel Messenger in seventh (17:32), Jonathan Beres in 14th (17:48), Avery Torres in 15th (18:15) and Nick Adams in 16th (18:16).
Brooke Rhodes was fourth overall in the girls’ race for Warsaw in a time of 21:08. Madeline Hooks was fifth for the Tigers in 21:10, followed by Aletheia Burritt in sixth (21:18), Hannah Thompson in 11th (22:11), Claire Kehler in 14th (22:35) and Emma Hayward in 15th (22:36).
Personal best times were posted Tuesday by Emma Lemon (22:55), Courtney Sainer (24:22) and Lauren Brown (29:12).
The Warsaw girls team will compete in the Bruin Invitational Saturday hosted by Fort Wayne Northrop. The boys and girls teams will face Northridge and NorthWood in NLC action next Tuesday at Stauffer Park in Nappanee.
Boys’ Soccer Squad Blanks Memorial
The No. 4 Warsaw boys soccer team posted a 2-0 win at Elkhart Memorial Tuesday night.
Zach Tucker and Sam Allbritten each had a goal for the Tigers in the Northern Lakes Conference win. Allbritten and Matt Williams each collected an assist for the Tigers.
Warsaw had a 13-5 edge in shots, including 8-3 on goal. The Tigers had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Warsaw keeper Peyton Long notched the shutout.
Warsaw improves to 6-0-4 overall and 2-0-1 in the NLC.
Memorial won the junior varsity match by a 2-1 final. Brad O’Cock scored for the JV Tigers.
Warsaw plays at Fort Wayne Carroll Saturday.
VanWormer Leads Warsaw Win
The Warsaw girls soccer team wasted no time Tuesday in taking care of Elkhart Memorial.
The host Tigers got three goals in the game’s first seven minutes to roll to a 6-1 win in the Northern Lakes Conference contest.
Clair Snodgrass scored in the third minute for Warsaw. The Tigers then got an own goal in the sixth minute and a score from Brooklyn Jackson in the seventh.
Elizabeth VanWormer led the winners with two goals.
Julie Frazzetta had a goal and two assists and Jackson and Snodgrass each had a goal and an assist for the Tigers.
Warsaw keeper Abby Schue had eight saves, including one on a penalty kick.
Warsaw improves to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the NLC.
The Tigers won the junior varsity match 4-0. Scoring for the Warsaw JV, which is now 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the NLC, were Melanie Cervantes, Jessica Keyes, Brooke Allen and Tsige Berelsman.
Warsaw hosts Concord Thursday in another NLC matchup.
