WARSAW — A man who raped a teenager in Kosciusko County will serve 22 years in prison.
Joshua Anthony Adamson, 39, Fairmount, was found guilty in a May jury trial of rape, a level 3 felony; and a habitual offender enhancement. The jury found him not guilty on two counts of child molestation and two counts of intimidation.
Adamson was sentenced in Kosciusko Superior Court One on Monday, June 5.
For rape, Kosciusko Superior Court One Judge Karin McGrath sentenced Adamson to 12 years in the Indiana Department of Correction. An additional 10 years was added to Adamson’s sentence through the habitual offender enhancement.
Adamson has 65 days of jail time credit. A no-contact order between Adamson and the teenager remains in effect, and Adamson must register as a sex offender.
When asked if he intends to file an appeal, Adamson said he plans to do so.
At sentencing, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Sobek read a victim impact statement from the teenager, who did not attend the sentencing but testified at the jury trial.
“My life will forever be in shambles because of this terrible person,” the teenager said in their statement. “My childhood will forever haunt me…I will never be able to understand why you (Adamson) would want to do these things. You (Adamson) are the reason I suffer from depression and struggle with the will to live. I can finally feel freedom now that you’ve been caught.”
Sobek said he agreed with the presented aggravators in the case, which include Adamson’s prior criminal history.
Defense Attorney Austin Rovenstine said he and Adamson respected the jury’s decision and noted the importance to also respect Adamson’s right to continue maintaining his innocence. He asked McGrath to take into consideration that Adamson’s prior criminal history is not similar to what the jury found him guilty of.
Rovenstine also emphasized the importance of Adamson receiving medical care while serving his sentence, as Adamson is a Type 1 diabetic.
Adamson did not make a statement in court.
Affidavit of Probable Cause
On Jan. 31, 2022, a Warsaw Police officer responded to a report of a child being molested by Adamson.
In an interview, a mother said their child told her Adamson molested them multiple times.
According to court documents, during an interview at Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center, the child said the last time Adamson sexually assaulted them was in May 2021. Adamson forced himself on the child, even though the child told him “no” several times and attempted to push him away.
Adamson has prior unrelated felony convictions for robbery, criminal recklessness, and intimidation.
