Nonprofit Requests Remain Unchanged
Requests for funding from nonprofit organizations will be considered without changes by the Warsaw Common Council. Total requests from nonprofits for 2014 total $230,900.
During Monday night’s regular city meeting, councilman Jeff Grose asked to invite a representative of Kosciusko Area Bus Service back to discuss their request for $28,500. While the council voted to move forward with the initial dollar requests unchanged, Grose said he wanted to know if the KABS request is still valid. “Based on the county’s decision to make cuts, I’d like to re-evaluate what they want,” he said. “The county, I think, denied their request for an additional $10,000. I’d like a representative to come in and discuss what that means with us. I’m not sure if the request is still valid now.”
Other requests from nonprofit organizations include $17,500 from the Animal Welfare League, $31,000 from the City-County Athletic Complex, $30,000 from the Warsaw Housing Authority, $17,300 from Housing Opportunities of Warsaw, and the Warsaw Community Development Corporation is asking for $12,600 for operating expenses and an additional $25,000 for facade grants.
Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation is asking for $50,000 from the city to assist with efforts to retain businesses, promote new business development and continue to work toward infrastructure development.
The city’s budget will have to be adopted by Oct. 21 and submitted to the state by Nov. 1. A public hearing on the budgets will take place at the next regular meeting, which has been moved to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8. Also during that meeting will be a presentation from the Northeast Indiana Passenger Rail Association on the high-speed rail project and discussion regarding feasibility of the project.
Funding of rail service will also be discussed, including a request by NIPRA for local support of a preliminary planning study. The community is invited to attend. The meeting will be held in the Warsaw City Hall Council Chamber.
