Airports Create Huge Gains In Indiana

INDIANA — Indiana has 69 aviation facilities and this network creates a large amount of business growth and economic opportunities.
Data from the Indiana Department of Transportation shows airports in the state have been generating a multi-billion-dollar impact.
There are four commercial service airports, 64 general aviation airports and one heliport. There are two smaller unclassified airports that were not part of INDOT’s economic impact study. This study also provides information on general aviation airports including those in Elkhart, Fulton, Marshall and Wabash counties.
Airports have a ton of diverse happenings daily. There is commercial travel, shipping, business, research, recreation, emergency, public safety, agriculture and other operations. Additionally those visitors to the state coming in through airports spend money on lodging, food and entertainment.
FedEx and Rolls-Royce are key players for airports within the state. They are supported by a group of small and medium firms who provide such services as maintenance, manufacturing, supply and repair.
To create the impact study, INDOT researchers looked at airport employment, contracted employment, tenant employment, capital spending, visitors and spending amount, airport revenues just to name a few.
The public-use facilities in the state’s aviation system generated:
- 75,000 jobs.
- Approximately $5.8 billion in labor income.
- Close to $5.8 billion in GDP.
- Had an output of approximately $10.3 billion.
- Provided a tax impact of $1.3 billion.
