WARSAW — A Syracuse man was recently arrested in two criminal cases for allegedly battering a woman and holding her against her will.
In the first case, Seth James Deamaral, 31, 18 EMS D25 Lane, Syracuse, is charged with criminal confinement and burglary, both level 3 felonies; intimidation with a deadly weapon, a level 5 felony; and domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury and domestic battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, both level 6 felonies. Deamaral is also charged with criminal confinement, domestic battery with a prior conviction, and theft with a prior conviction, all level 6 felonies; and domestic battery and theft, both class A misdemeanors, in a second case.
On June 29, a Warsaw Police officer responded to a stalking complaint. A woman said she was concerned about Deamaral being near her residence.
According to court documents, about two hours later, the woman called 911 because Deamaral injured her and was holding her hostage. Officers went to the woman’s home and were unable to locate her.
Two hours passed and the woman returned to her home in a vehicle. An officer noticed bruising near the woman’s left eye and requested medics at the scene.
The woman told officers that earlier in the day, she was on her porch when Deamaral hit her in the face and forced her into her home against her will. Deamaral allegedly hit the woman several more times to the point where the woman briefly blacked out. The woman recorded the incident with Deamaral on her cellphone and showed the video to police. She also said Deamaral did not have permission to be in her home.
Deamaral and the woman then left the home in a vehicle. While in the vehicle, Deamaral threatened to kill the woman while he held a knife. At one point, Deamaral stopped the vehicle and attempted to kick the woman, but he fell down. When this happened, the woman got into the vehicle’s driver’s seat and drove away.
Officers documented bruising on the woman’s right arm and face, and swelling on the back of her head.
On July 19, the woman was at a local hospital when Deamaral threatened to beat her up.
A Warsaw officer found Deamaral in the hospital’s parking lot. Deamaral said he fought with the woman inside the hospital because she wanted to leave and he did not want her to leave.
The woman said while she was in the hospital, Deamaral grabbed her by the back of her neck, pushed her down into a chair, and prevented her form leaving. A doctor witnessed this incident.
A backpack in the hospital left behind by Deamaral contained multiple items that belonged to the hospital, including towels, tourniquets, and tape.
Deamaral denied placing his hands on the woman’s neck and said he was giving the woman a hug.
Video footage from the hospital showed Deamaral bear hugging the woman while it appeared the woman was attempting to get away from him.
Deamaral has prior convictions for battery, domestic battery, and conversion.
Deamaral was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on July 19.
