PIERCETON — Greg Chism is seeking his first term on the Pierceton Town Council.
A resident of the town since 2009, Chism is running as a Republican. He said his decision to seek a seat is based on wanting more transparency with town government.
“I just feel like we’re not open and honest enough on our council,” he said.
Chism is a Navy veteran. He spent time in recruitment and was named the recruiter of the year for Indiana in 1991.
“I’d like to see more stuff for our military (in Pierceton),” he said. If elected to the council, Chism said he’d like to put banners honoring military members and first responders and flags on poles in town.
Chism is originally from Swayzee and graduated from Madison-Grant High School. He’s a supervisor at Kelly Box in New Haven.
He has three children, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
As Chism and the other five people running for Pierceton Town Council are all Republicans and there are only three spots open on the council, a GOP town convention will occur to narrow down the candidates.
The convention will occur at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Pierceton Community Center. To vote in it, people must be registered voters living in Pierceton and either affirm that they voted as a Republican in the last primary election they participated in and voted for a majority of Republicans in the last regular election in 2022 or plan to vote Republican in the convention.
Those affirmations will be done at the convention.
As no candidates from other political parties have filed to run for election in Pierceton, the three chosen for the council and one for clerk-treasurer at Thursday’s convention will take on those roles in 2024.
