CLAYPOOL — Following a public hearing ahead of an Aug. 15 meeting, the Claypool Town Council raised the sewer rate 38%, bringing the residential monthly minimum up to $73.32 for 4,000 gallons.
This new rate is a result of a $42,000 shortfall, as the town needs $154,000 in annual revenue to maintain the sewer utility and is bringing in $112,000 with the current rate. This is the first time the rate has increased since 1999.
Clerk-Treasurer Pat Warner is looking into trash and recycling rates as the town’s contract with Waste Management is up in December. Each residence currently has trash pick-up only for $13.44 per month. If the town switched to Borden, each residence could get weekly trash and biweekly recycling pickup for $14.40 per month.
Utilities Superintendent Danny Warner said Complete Fleet will not repair the town’s dump truck as is because the frame is in poor condition. The council tabled the decision on fixing the truck for further discussion.
Town Marshal Ben Sanders reported 81 calls for service in July. Sanders provided his resignation letter to the council members. He will remain in his position until a new marshal is hired or Jan. 1, 2024, whichever comes first.
Council Member Gene Warner thanked Sanders for his six years of service to the town.
The council will next meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 19.
