Warsaw Sports Wrap – Oct. 3
The Warsaw boys soccer team closed out regular-season and conference play with a 1-0 loss at Northridge Thursday night.
The host Raiders, who were honorable mention in this week’s Class 2-A state poll, blanked the Class 2-A No. 6 Tigers in the final Northern Lakes Conference match.
Hunter Hardin tallied the lone goal of the contest in the 14th minute, off an assist from Steven Holley, to give the hosts the league victory.
The game was called with about nine minutes to play due to weather.
Warsaw had seven shots to six for the Raiders. The Tigers had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Keeper Peyton Long had four saves for the Tigers. Goalie Phillip Keller made seven stops for the shutout for the Raiders.
Northridge improves to 11-3-3 overall and finishes at 5-1-1 in the NLC. Warsaw drops to 10-2-5 overall and concludes NLC play at 4-2-1.
No. 13 Goshen capped off a 7-0 run through the NLC Thursday night with a 4-0 league win over Elkhart Memorial. The Redskins, who beat Warsaw 2-0 last week, improved to 14-1 overall.
The junior varsity contest Thursday night ended in a 0-0 draw between the Tigers and the Raiders.
Warsaw, the state runner-up in 2012, begins sectional play next Wednesday. The Tigers will face Culver Academies at 5 p.m. at Warsaw.
Volleyball Team Tops Panthers
Katie Voelz powered the Warsaw volleyball team past host NorthWood Thursday night.
Junior middle Voelz slammed down 27 kills as the Tigers topped the Panthers 22-25, 25-21, 25-25, 27-25 in Northern Lakes Conference action in Nappanee.
Senior Laura Craig had 16 kills and Emily Poe 14 as Warsaw improved to 17-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Peyton Adamiec led the defense for the winners with 21 digs. Poe had 20 and Craig 19. Cassie Hoag and Megan Chauncey each had two aces.
Chauncey had 42 assists and Hoag 18 in the win. Jordyn Lindeman led the team with four blocks, while Chauncey had three and Voelz two.
Warsaw won the junior varsity match 25-23, 25-18. Courtney Steffensmeier had eight kills, Kenzie Welk four and Alison VanOsdol two for the winners.
Kendra Burns had 14 assists and Haley Peterson one for the JV Tigers. Caroline Mayer had eight digs. Welk and Blake McGarvey four each. Mayer and Welk each had two aces and Emily May had two blocks and Emily Bailey one.
Warsaw hosts Huntington North Monday and concludes NLC play at Concord Thursday.
Soccer Game Moved To Saturday
The Warsaw girls’ soccer game Thursday night versus Northridge was postponed due to lightning.
The regular season and Northern Lakes Conference finale will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. at WCHS. The match will be a varsity only contest.
The NLC match will start over on Saturday as it was suspended about midway through the first half Thursday night with the score 0-0.
Northridge, ranked No. 13 in Class 2-A, is 12-1-2 overall and has already won its fifth straight NLC championship at 6-0. The Raiders have won 12 straight matches after opening the season 0-1-2.
Warsaw sits at 9-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the NLC on the season. Coach Peter Lucht’s team has won seven in a row.
The Warsaw girls’ junior varsity team blanked Northridge 2-0 Thursday night.
Christina Tiahuetl had a goal and an assist for Warsaw. Megan Kratzsch also had a goal and an assist for the JV Tigers.
Warsaw improves to 8-4 overall and finishes 6-1 in the NLC to tie Concord for first place.
The Warsaw JV team will host the NLC Tournament Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
