WARSAW — A Cromwell man will serve over three years in prison for three criminal cases involving drugs.
Jerry Wayne Jilton, 34, 9691 E. Pixie Parkway, Cromwell, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a level 5 felony; and resisting law enforcement resulting in injury and possession of methamphetamine, both level 6 felonies. Nine additional criminal charges were all dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
A probation violation for a meth dealing case for Jilton was also addressed in court. Jilton began two years on probation in January 2020, and a verified petition of probation violation was filed in July 2021.
Jilton was sentenced in Kosciusko Circuit Court on Monday, Jan. 15.
For the Level 5 meth possession charge, Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Michael Reed sentenced Jilton to three years in the Indiana Department of Correction. He also received one-year DOC sentences for resisting law enforcement and for the Level 6 meth possession charge. All three charges will be served at the same time and will be served after Jilton’s time for his probation violation.
The balance of Jilton’s probation was revoked, with Jilton having 236 days of jail time credit plus good time credit as calculated. Reed recommended Jilton for mental health treatment and Recovery While Incarcerated during his time in prison.
At sentencing, Prosecutor Brad Voelz noted Jilton’s criminal history involving drug use and violence. He requested Jilton be given the maximum sentence due to his history.
Defense Attorney Scott Reust requested RWI for Jilton.
“I’m learning to accept the consequences for my actions and want to be a better person,” said Jilton.
On June 11, 2021, a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputy was patrolling in Cromwell when he noticed a parked vehicle with its driver’s side door open. The deputy went to approach the vehicle to ask if everything was okay when he noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Jilton was a passenger in the vehicle. Upon searching Jilton’s person, the deputy found a plastic bag containing meth.
On May 24, 2023, an Indiana State Police trooper noticed Jilton walking in Cromwell and knew Jilton had active felony warrants for his arrest. When the trooper grabbed Jilton’s arm after informing him of the warrants, Jilton hit the trooper’s chest, knocking a body camera off the trooper. Upon searching Jilton’s person, the trooper found a plastic bag containing one gram of meth.
