Goshen Health Expands Cardiovascular Services With New Interventional Radiology Capabilities
News Release
To better meet the needs of the community, Goshen Hospital has invested in a dedicated state-of-the-art interventional radiology lab and a computed tomography suite. Interventional radiology is a growing area of medicine that enables doctors to use minimally invasive procedures to treat conditions related to the heart and vascular system, cancer, enlarged prostate, hernias, uterine fibroids and more.
With the help of a fluoroscopy, ultrasound and CT scanner, doctors get precise images so they can guide tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. For many procedures, doctors place a small catheter into an artery or vein and use the blood vessels to reach almost any organ. When they reach the area that needs treatment, doctors can take biopsies, place stents, or deliver medication or treatment exactly where it’s needed.
“We are fortunate to have two skilled interventional radiology specialists at Goshen Hospital, which gives us greater capacity than many hospitals. Dr. Charles Bower and Dr. Justin Lightburn maximize our ability to use interventional radiology to diagnose and resolve medical issues,” said Randy Christophel, President and Chief Executive Officer. “This new dedicated lab will enable us to schedule patients more quickly and efficiently, thus better meeting the needs of our community.”
Minimally invasive procedures have many advantages over traditional surgery, including less pain and bleeding; shorter hospital stays; faster recovery time; reduced risk of infection; and fewer and smaller scars.
The new lab, which opened last month, is located on the second floor of Goshen Hospital.
