Walter D. Young
Walter D. Young, known as “Wally,” will be forever missed. Wally was born Nov. 30, 1941, and sadly passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. Wally was the last sibling of seven to leave this earth.
He worked at The Navy Club in Fort Wayne then ran and managed Adams Rib Room. The beautiful mother of Wally’s three children, Ann M. Fremion, relocated with him to Syracuse in 1979, where they bought and created Quackers Lounge (“Duck-In and Waddle-Out”). After getting remarried in the late ’80s to Sandra, Wally and she worked hard, bought Dangles (uptown/underground bar) and then also renamed Quackers to Hammer’s Pub and Grub as the years passed on. With almost 50 years of hard work and serving others, he became a true guru of the bar business and a mentor to others. Wally would help other businesses get started, up and running.
Wally loved to play jokes, laugh, listen to music, play golf, cards and dice, and his favorite thing of all was taking your money. A dad of three, he was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Melinda Ann (“Mindy”) Young; wife of 35 years, Sandra Young; and stepdaughter, Darci Denton, and he is survived by his daughter, Wendy Young-Hampton; son, Andrew Joseph Young; his favorite son-in-law, James Hampton; and stepdaughter, Kim Cole-Denton. Wally so loved his three grandsons, Austin Young, Tanner Hampton and Ian Evans, and his four great-grandchildren who brought him laughter and happy tears, Brody, Briant, Sophia and Adeline Young. He was a friend to so many; he touched a lot of hearts and will be missed. A true legend in the Syracuse/Lake Wawasee area.
Family is like branches on a tree. We all grow in different directions, yet our roots remain as one.
A celebration of life will be held from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at Hammers, 104 E. Pickwick Road, Syracuse.
