WEST LAFAYETTE — As April, designated as National Hands-Free Driving Month by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, comes to a close, the Indiana State Police is urging drivers to adhere to the Hands-Free Driving Law, enacted to enhance safety on Indiana roadways.

Enacted in Indiana in 2020, the Hands-Free Driving Law prohibits drivers from holding a telecommunications device, such as a cellphone, while operating a motor vehicle. The only exception to this law is to call 9-1-1 in case of emergency.

The Hands-Free Driving Law aims to prevent accidents caused by distractions, which remain a significant concern on Indiana’s roadways. By encouraging drivers to keep their focus on the road and their hands on the wheel, this law aimed to reduce the number of collisions, injuries, and fatalities associated with distracted driving.

Violation of the Hands-Free Driving Law may result in fines and penalties, as outlined in Indiana Criminal Code. Law enforcement agencies across the state will continue actively enforcing this law to ensure compliance and enhance road safety for all motorists.

The ISP urges all drivers to familiarize themselves with the Hands-Free Driving Law and prioritize safety while operating a motor vehicle. As April, National Hands-Free Driving Month, concludes, it is essential for drivers to remember the importance of staying focused on the road.
