Work Begins On Syracuse Fire Station
Turkey Creek Fire Territory Chief Mickey Scott reported the Fire Station I renovation project has received a foundation release from the state, but is still waiting for a construction design release to be issued. Scott made his report during the regular monthly meeting of the Turkey Creek Fire Territory Executive Board.
Construction meetings with Scott, the architect, contractor, subcontractors and Turkey Creek Township Trustee will be held every two weeks to review the progress. Scott also told the board there are currently no down spouts on the north side of the fire station so water has seeped into the pavement toward the foundation. Down spouts will be installed to pull water away from the building and the area asphalted to keep water from pooling in the future.
The department has also been working with its health insurance agent, Chris Cotton, PMG Agency, on its health insurance being in compliance with the Affordable Care Act. The current contract will run from Dec. 1 to Nov. 30, 2014, with an 11.3 percent increase in premiums.
Bids are being accepted on the remount and refurbish of the equipment truck. Bids are due by 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, with bid opening to take place at 3:30 p.m. the same day.
The fire department requested permission to spend $5,568.75 on new hose. Scott explained per National Fire Protection Association guidelines, hose manufactured prior to 1987 to meet guidelines set in 1979 be replaced. The department needs to replace 30 section of 3 inch hose, which includes 25 50 foot sections of 3 inch double jacketed rubber lined hose and five 15 foot sections of 3 inch double jacketed rubber lined fire hose.
The board approved the purchase of the new hose and requested Scott find a way to donate the hose for a non-fire use to some entity.
The board also approved the salary ordinance for 2014 which was the same as 2013. Fire fighters will be paid the same salary, the only difference will be in their longevity pay.
