SIDNEY — Sidney Town Council voted against a proposal for additional police coverage at a meeting on Monday, Sept. 9.

At an August meeting, the council heard from Harrison Gunter, a retired police officer from Hobert who offered to supplement Pierceton Police Department’s coverage for the town of Sidney. He provided the council with a proposal to serve as a reserve policeman six hours per day, two days per week.

The council stated they read a proposal by Gunter and briefly looked into insurance requirements for the position and the vehicle required. Based on preliminary insurance cost estimates along with concerns about Gunter’s two-and-a-half hour commute, the council voted against the proposal. Council President Gavin Parrett stated that he would not be opposed to looking into such a position in the future under different circumstances but this did not seem to be the right time financially. Council Member Sharon Rancourt stated that she was happy with Pierceton PD’s coverage and did not find it necessary to seek additional coverage.

In other business, the council followed up with the citizen concerns about the time of day the mosquito spray service was administered. The council reported that they were assured by Spring Green that spraying at midday is as effective as spraying at dusk.

Council noted that they will be having another speaker next month to discuss a strategic plan proposal, so they have an option in addition to Brenda Rigdon, who presented a proposal in August.

The council decided to table a discussion about filling potholes, citing various approaches that should be considered to address public safety.

The council also:

• Discussed citizen Chris Bradford’s renovation request.
• Provided an update that the Harney property next sale date is Oct. 29.
• Confirmed they would switch internet providers to KConnect.

The next council meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14 at Jackson Township Fire Station.
