The Truth About Chemicals In Vapes, Myth Of Water Vapor
Dear Editor,
As vaping continues to grow in popularity I want to address a misconception: the belief that the cloud emitted from e-cigarettes is “water vapor.” What users are actually inhaling — and exhaling — is aerosol made from harmful chemicals.
Most vaping liquids consist of nicotine, flavoring agents and chemicals like propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. When these ingredients are heated, they produce an aerosol. This aerosol carries toxic substances, including heavy metals such as nickel, tin and lead, as well as volatile organic compounds and cancer-causing chemicals. Some of the flavoring agents used, like diacetyl, have been linked to lung diseases, including “popcorn lung.”
The effects of inhaling these chemicals are still being studied. Vaping has been associated with lung injuries, cardiovascular damage and a higher risk of addiction due to a higher nicotine concentration.
Parents, educators and health professionals should have open conversations about the dangers of e-cigarette use and correct these misconceptions. The vape cloud is not water vapor; it’s an aerosol that poses serious health risks.
