Mable I. Cain Ganshorn
Mabel I. Cain Ganshorn, 99, of Goshen, Ind., and formerly of Nappanee, Ind., and Etna Green, Ind., passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at her home in Waterford Crossing Apartments, Goshen.
She was born July 8, 1914, to Chris and Edith (Arick) Cain in Kosciusko County, near Etna Green, Ind. She graduated from Etna Green High School in 1932. After high school she worked as a live-in maid and nanny for several families in the northern Indiana area.
On April 24, 1938, she married Elbert D. Ganshorn, who survives. They were married at the home of her parents on the farm near Etna Green. They moved to Nappanee a year later and resided there for 73 years until moving to Goshen in December 2011. They spent many summer days at their cottage on Dewart Lake and 20 winters in Bradenton, Fla.
She and Bert were longtime active members of Grace EUB/Nappanee United Methodist Church, hosted many summer Sunday School class parties at their lake cottage during the 1950s. Mabel grew up in the Mt. Tabor Church of God.
Mabel was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, cooking and baking. After raising her family she spent several years working for her son, Jerry, in his Syracuse print shop.
Mable is survived by her husband: Bert, Goshen; her son: Jerry (Sue) Ganshorn; a daughter: JoAnn (Allen) Barrett, both of Syracuse, Ind.; grandchildren: Chris Ganshorn, Tony Ganshorn and Alex Barrett, all of Syracuse; Elizabeth (Spencer) Lerch, Indianapolis, Ind.; great-grandchildren: Brady and Bennett Ganshorn, Griffin Lerch; and a nephew: Larry George, New York City and Vermont.
She was preceded in death by brothers: Melvin, Emerson and Landis Cain; and a sister: Marjory Cain George.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at Waterford Crossing Apartments, 1212 Waterford Circle, Goshen. Rev. Bob Wyman will officiate. Burial will be at Stony Point Cemetery, Kosicusko County.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Goshen Home Care and Hospice.
