(UPDATE: As of 5 p.m. this afternoon (Tuesday) Kosciusko County’s Level III Travel Warning will be downgraded back to the Watch Level. Kosciusko County Government Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Marshall County is terminating its Warning Level at noon today. Whitley County will go under a Level II Watch as of 5 p.m. Tuesday. Elkhart County’s emergency declaration expires at 6 p.m.) 

Early Sunday morning, Kosciusko County Commissioners President Ron Truex signed a Level III Emergency, meaning all travel on unincorporated roads in the county is prohibited, except for the purpose of emergency response and travel to and from work. Unincorporated roads are those not maintained by a city/town or the state, but by the county highway department.

The declaration is in effect until further notice and recognizes the significant snowfall which has been aggravated by high winds and extremely cold temperatures.

Per the Indiana Code as part of this declaration, fines associated with ignoring the declaration could be handed out by law enforcement. According to Kosciusko County Emergency Management Director Ed Rock, Sec. 34 of IC 10-14-3-34 notes that a person who “knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly violates this chapter commits a Class B misdemeanor.”
