(This is part one of a two-part series)
We have just entered the New Year. We start asking questions about our own life. Last week I spoke about how I believe we all have a desire to leave our mark on this world. We ask about our purpose and our passions.
This week I want to go in a little different direction about other questions we ask ourselves, not only at this time of year, but throughout the year. Have you ever asked yourself questions similar to the ones below?
Why do I act the way I do? Why do I think the way I do? Why do I enjoy spending time with certain types people or doing types certain types of things? What makes me who I am?
What you are asking yourself is, ‘Who am I?’ The answer to these and other similar questions is wrapped up in your unique, God-given personality. Have you ever wondered why you are drawn to certain people or they are drawn to you? Have you ever wondered why doing certain things for pleasure or for work just feels like the right fit? It is because of your personality. It is who you are made to be.
In order to achieve your ultimate success you must pursue your passions, use your talents and understand your personality. Too often, most people only focus on their talents – what they can do. They forget to pursue their passions and understand their unique God-given personality.
Knowing and understanding your personality brings clarity and confidence to make better life, relationship and career decisions. It will equip you to communicate on a whole new level with those you interact with most often too. This is because you will understand how you and those around you need to receive information. We all like to receive information from others based on our personalities, not theirs.
When you fully understand your personality it will empower you to make sound career decisions and choices. As an example, I often see someone who has a personality to be a great salesman trying to become an accountant or computer programmer. This is not a good fit. They will be frustrated in the long term. They are trying to be something they are not equipped to be.
There are several different personality profiles you can take. I have found one personality profile which I think is amazing. Years ago I answered the questions and received a 40 page summary about myself. As I read sections to my wife, she was blown away. She kept saying, ‘That’s you … that’s so you?’ The profile I use for business and coaching is the DISC Personality Profile.
There are four basic types of personalities in the DISC Profile: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientious. Here is a brief description of each as well. (Next week I will go into detail on each of the four types of personalities.)
- Dominance – someone who places emphasis on accomplishing results, the bottom line and is confident. They Influence – someone who places emphasis on influencing or persuading others, openness and is relationship oriented.
- Steadiness – someone who places emphasis on cooperation, sincerity, dependability and seeks to get along.
- Conscientious – someone who places emphasis on quality, accuracy, expertise and doing things the right way.
If you would like to find out more about your personality and how it can make a huge difference in your life, go to the ‘Products’ page on my website – www.lifequestcoaching.net. You will find more information about personality profiles there.
