Warsaw Park Board Elects 2014 Officers
Officers for the Warsaw Parks and Recreation Park Board were elected at the meeting on Jan. 21. The board moved to re-elect all of its officers in their current capacities.
Bill Baldwin will remain president. Steve Haines, Larry Ladd, Rick Paczkowski, Jerry Frush and Michelle Boxell will continue serving as officers.
Diane Quance was introduced as the new Warsaw City Council representative for the park board.
Park superintendent Larry Plummer reported that a claim for a grant through Indiana Homeland Security was filed to help with expenses incurred during the blizzard earlier this month. Funds would cover the warming station that was set up at Center Lake Pavilion and the replacement of a truck transmission that went out on one of the plow trucks.
Plummer also mentioned that a request to show a Notre Dame football game on a jumbo-tron at Fribley Field was brought before the board late last year. The event would be a fundraiser for the Young Tigers football program.
Plummer reported that permits and copyrights were being explored, but the event seemed possible. The board motioned to proceed with the event, provided proper permits were obtained; the motion passed.
Recreation director Staci Young provided a recap of holiday events saying around 400 people showed up for the Christmas Countdown, and the Letters for Santa program received 99 letters this year, the most ever.
Young also reported the classic rock band Blue Oyster Cult was set to perform in Warsaw on June 13. Some may remember the band was scheduled to play last year, but had to cancel at the last minute. Young said the cancellation clause in this year’s contract was much tighter, and “unless a hurricane comes through or a band member dies, they should play.”
The board also reviewed some of the projects that are planned for 2014. Among them are plans to replace the high pressure sodium light bulbs in Central Park with LEDs, getting new banquet chair and tables for the park pavilion and roofing the firemen’s building.
