Prep Postseason Action Approaching
The high school winter sports season, which has come to a standstill of late due to the weather, still has plenty of big events on tap.
That is, weather permitting.
The Northern Lakes Conference boys swim meet is set to begin with prelims Thursday (Jan. 30) night at Northridge High School. Action begins at 5:30 p.m. with diving prelims on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 9 a.m. and finals in all events at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Host Northridge is the heavy favorite to lay claim to the conference title. The Raiders went 7-0 during the NLC regular season.
A strong Warsaw boys team should be in the mix at the NLC Championships. Coach Nate Long’s team went 6-1 during league competition with just a loss to the Raiders. The Tigers are led by Spencer Davidson, Jayden Parrett, Zach Taylor, Josh Miller, Ethan Cook, Matt Wildman and JD French.
Wawasee finished 3-4 in NLC action during the head-to-head portion of the schedule.
The girls swim sectionals are set for Feb. 6 and 8 with Warsaw and Northridge serving as hosts. The boys swim sectionals are scheduled for Feb. 20 and 22 at Warsaw and Concord.
Area wrestlers turn their thoughts to the postseason starting Saturday (Feb. 1). Many prep grapplers have had a long layoff due to the fact that several area conference tournaments, including the NLC, NIC and NSC had to be cancelled this past weekend due to the snow and cold. The TRC tournament has been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 30 at Rochester High School.
Sectional action is slated for three area sites Saturday. Warsaw, Wawasee, Triton and Tippecanoe Valley will all compete in the Plymouth Sectional. The Pilgrims are the defending champions and the field also includes Bremen, Caston, Culver, Rochester and Culver Academies. Action is set to start at 9 a.m. at PHS.
Elkhart Memorial and Fort Wayne Carroll each will also host wrestling sectionals Saturday. The eight-team field at Memorial, where action also begins at 9 a.m., includes the defending champion hosts, along with Goshen, Northridge, NorthWood, Concord, Central, Jimtown and Fairfield. At Carroll, where action starts at 8 a.m., the 10-team field includes Whitko.
The top four finishers in each weight class at each sectional site advances to regional competition on Saturday, Feb. 8.
The IHSAA will also hold its state tournament pairings for girls basketball on Sunday, Feb. 2. The draw will begin at 4 p.m. in Indianapolis. Girls basketball sectionals start the week of Feb. 10 with area hosts including Northridge in Class 4-A, NorthWood in Class 3-A and Triton and Hamilton both in Class 1-A.
