House Alters Measure Protecting Civil Unions
It’s at least a temporary win for opponents of the marriage amendment that would ban same-sex marriages in Indiana. On Monday, House members voted 52-43 Monday to remove language that could have banned civil unions or eliminated domestic partner benefits.
“HJR-3 is a flawed bill and it has dangerous consequences for thousands of Hoosier families,” Freedom Indiana, the coalition working to derail the measure, said in a statement. “The second sentence of HJR-3 would have far-reaching ramifications for gay and lesbian Hoosiers who just want to protect their families.”
Supporters argue the measure should be sent to Hoosier voters, while opponents contend it sends the wrong message to potential work force talent.
The state Senate could restore language involving civil unions and domestic partner benefits that was removed by members of the House. If the language is restored by the Senate, however, and then passed by the House, the measure could go to voters in November.
If the revised version is approved during this legislative session, a referendum on the issue would not take place until 2016.
