Community Leaders Raise ‘Bail’ For MDA
Kosciusko County business and community leaders were placed behind bars today for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Lock-Up. The lock-up was held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Noa Noa in an effort to raise MDA’s fundraising goal of $70,000.
According to MDA Fundraising Coordinator Alison Ekert, a total of 150 “jail birds” were recruited to participate in today’s lock-up. Ekert estimated that of the 150 recruited, approximately 65 business and community leaders attended today’s event. Jail birds who participated were put in a prison smock, hand-cuffed and posed behind a jail cell. They were then led to tables where they could call friends, family and business contacts to “bail them out.” All of the money raised was to benefit MDA.
Attendees were given a complimentary meal and those who raised over $400 were given an event T-shirt and placed on the lock-out “honor roll.” According to Ekert, all funds raised during the event will benefit local families within Kosciusko County who are dealing with muscular dystrophy. Funding will provide services for Kosciusko County patients at MDA’s free clinic in Fort Wayne, free flu shot and funding for research about the disease and a cure. Jail birds also worked to raise funds for campers who visit the MDA’s summer camp, the cost of which is $800 per camper.
Sponsors for the event were Brenda Taylor, Larry and Charlene Jung, Kohl’s, WRSW and Noa Noa Wood Grill and Sushi Bar. Drivers for the event included R&B Car Company, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Warsaw Police Department and Club Car Limo.
