Although a number of entries pulled out due to the heat, which by mid-morning had already surpassed 90 degrees, the Syracuse 175th birthday parade went on as scheduled Saturday. About 40 entries participated, including local police and fire units, church, community groups and businesses.
The town also intertwined its its third annual Summerfest celebration at the Lakeland Youth Center parking lot, which was a rousing success. Several artists displayed and sold their work while businesses and organizations exhibited.
A planned dodgeball game was axed by the heat, but residents still came out to enjoy music by the Backyard Brass band, food and the stalls full of artwork.
At 12:30 p.m., Mutual Bank sponsored pedal car races for all ages, which were well attended. Numerous youths and four teams of adults representing Lakeland Youth Center and the Syracuse Parks Department participated in several “heated” contests.
