Irish Pair Earn All-American Honors
SOUTH BEND – The honors just continue to come in for Notre Dame stars Kayla McBride and Jewell Loyd.
The pair became the first teammates in program history to earn USBWA All-American honors.
The 10-member team was announced today.
McBride, a senior guard, and Loyd, a sophomore guard represent the No. 2 and undefeated Irish. Former Irish star Skylar Diggins was chosen to the team in both 2012 and 2013.
McBride, the ACC Player of the Year and a finalist for the Wade Trophy, is averaging 17.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.
Loyd, who was the UWBWA Freshman of the Year in 2013, averages 18.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
The All-American team also includes seniors Stefanie Dolson and Bria Hartley and sophomore Breanna Stewart of top-ranked and undefeated UConn. Also named to the squad were seniors Maggie Lucas (Penn State), Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford), Shoni Shimmel (Louisville), Odyssey Sims (Baylor) and Alyssa Thomas (Maryland).
The No. 2 Irish play host to No. 5 Baylor (32-4) tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Notre Dame Regional Final. The winner advances to the Final Four in Nashville April 6 and 8.
Tonight’s game at Notre Dame will be televised by ESPN.
