The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has released the latest drought monitor information and it shows the widespread drought conditions across the state continue to worsen.

Ongoing persistent dryness along with well above normal temperatures has lead to steadily worsening drought conditions across the region. Forecasters are calling for below normal rainfall and above normal temperatures for the remainder of July.

The NWS also says the persistent dry conditions will lead to further water supply issues, such as record low streamflows and heavier strains on aquifers. Agricultural loss estimates are expected to continue to mount with crop yield estimates diminishing.

Kosciusko County remains under a burn ban due to the dry conditions through Tuesday, July 17. On that day the county commissioners will vote on whether or not to extend the ban.

Further, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, on July 2 issued a Water Shortage Warning for 32 Indiana counties, including Kosciusko. The warning was issued to operators of public water systems and encouraged them and the communities they serve to begin voluntary conservation efforts. Communities listed in the warning are being asked to reduce water use by 10 to 15 percent.
