Grace Softball Squad Earns Split
WINONA LAKE – The Grace College softball team continued its impressive Crossroads League campaign with a split against Spring Arbor on Friday at Miller Field.
The Lady Lancers (21-25; 17-13; CL) maintained fourth place in the league standings with the split, facing one final series in the regular season. Grace will host fifth-place Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday 3 p.m. at Miller Field for the program’s Senior Day, honoring the contributions of Tiffany Featherston, Jordan McKinley and Olivia Winget.
Grace won the first game with an efficient 4-0 victory. The combined pitching efforts of Amanda Bowman and Allison Franklin handcuffed the Cougars (25-19; 16-14 CL) to three hits in the game.
The Lady Lancers struck twice in the third and twice in the fifth for the 4-0 victory during the opener. Clarissa Knight provided a two-out single in the third to plate Samantha Johnson and Brooke Shell. Johnson scored again in the fifth as did Knight.
Spring Arbor was walked five times and stranded nine runners on base, including two baserunners apiece in the final two innings. Bowman started the game on the mound and allowed two hits in four innings. Franklin allowed just one hit over the final three innings.
Alex Shipley and Shell were 2-for-3 in the game. Knight drove in two runs and Johnson scored twice.
The Cougars won the second game 5-1 despite the Lady Lancers scoring first. Shell had a leadoff single and was eventually brought in to score off a single by Grace’s all-time hits leader Olivia Winget.
Outside of the first few innings, Grace struggled to produce offense in the second game. A seventh-inning single from Shipley was Grace’s only hit over the final three innings.
Spring Arbor, on the other hand, tied the game in the second. The Cougars added four unearned runs in the fourth inning after two fielding errors by Grace.
Shipley finished 2-for-3 again in the second game, and Winget added two hits. Hannah Adams tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits.
